'' Someone said recently that my work has 'gravitas' and it really struck a chord.
The act of painting itself has always enabled me tyo feel grounded and in control. I suppose it stands to reason, therefore, that the resulting imgaeds reflect a stability and weightiness that not only anchor me, the artist, but also those observing.
The comment is particularly gratifying, however, becasue it was said in response to my latest work which, although very reminiscent of what came before , is now totally free from the constraints of all representational imagery.
I have at last made the leap into pure abstraction and whilst i can now delights in this new-found freedom of expression, it is also reassuring to have confirmation that, in essence each composition still manages to convey a sense of balance and solidity.
What, for me, is really exciting about this latest body of work however, is the sheer breadth of visual scope each individual painting has to offer. Most of the images can be rotated through 360° whilst still retaining their structural integrity. This means therefore, there are no wrong ways to view the work and thus, artist and observer alike are at liberty to explore so many more compositional varients.
