Light is the driving element, the inspiration in reality which is the compelling underlying element in all our art. Light creates colour, mood, ambience and drama. Light dictates the directional response to the final outcome, regardless of chosen media or painting surface.
Every season is different, and every location is unique. This exhibition presents landscapes with which we have a strong affinity for different reasons. Dramatic mountainous terrain, breath taking moorland landscapes and coastal sea sand and communities all have their place.
Each location has its own unique light creating drama and calm in equal measure. We may seek to capture dramatic silhouettes and strong tonal contrasts by painting directly facing the light source, or the softness of mountain mists under a winter sun, or a sense of calm created by the greyness of an overcast day. In each case the success or otherwise of the painting is so dependent on the quality of the light that illuminates the scene.
We hope that ‘Into the Light’ may also extend beyond the artwork to suggest a sense of optimism, moving from darkness to light, in a sometimes troubled world.
The paintings are presented both to inspire you and also to bring you that same sense of awe and wonder with nature that we felt as we painted them, enjoying the unique quality of the light that led us to each location.
