Elyot and Amanda, divorced after a short, stormy marriage, are honeymooning with their new spouses, respectively Sibyl and Victor — in adjacent rooms at the same French seaside hotel. From this excruciating coincidence, as Elyot and Amanda’s passion reignites, Coward constructs what he called ‘an intimate comedy’ that has been a classic of the English stage since it first opened in 1930 in London, with a cast including Laurence Olivier as Victor, as well as Coward himself as Elyot.
Risqué for its time, Private Lives exposes the pain of love beneath a veneer of sparkling wit. This elegant production by the 1812 Theatre Company — resident amateur company at Helmsley Arts Centre — played to full houses on its first short tour earlier this year.
