The orchestra, which is formed of York locals with a passion for symphonic music, has been in existence since 1980 and performs three concerts each season, with repertoire drawn from the great composers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

“The York Guildhall Orchestra goes on tour! Their visit to Helmsley will see them perform an intimate chamber concert, using a small group of players from the full orchestra. Their principal flautist will be the soloist in the Mozart concerto, and the strings will perform a rarely heard, but very beautiful, piece of Elgar. The Mozart symphony was requested by the Arts Centre as it was one of the late Jean Kershaw's (the Art Centre's former Director) favourite works.”
