About Sudeshna Chattopadhyay
Sudeshna Chattopadhyay is a painter based in York, UK.
She was born in India and lived there until 2000 at which point she left the country. She lived in Alicante and Mexico City for the next six years. Her daughter was born in 2005 and the following year she moved to York.
She graduated with a BA (First Class Hons) in Contemporary Fine Art from University of Leeds.
Her paintings feel like pages in her diary through which she explores everyday feelings and moods associated with the experiences of relationships to the self, other, objects, animal world.
She uses acrylics and oils to work in an intuitive and playful way exploring their materiality and juxtaposing thick paint with thin to create an interesting contrast on the surfaces of her paintings. Her chosen palette consists of pastel shades as she sees them as colours which offer a quiet and contemplative mood to the viewer’s eye. Sometimes she changes this to livelier colours depending on the mood in the painting she is working on.
She thinks of Amadeo Modigliani, Gwen John, Pablo Picasso, Peter Doig, Winifred Nicholson, Henri Matisse amongst many others when she works.
