
Volunteer Trustee – Helmsley Arts Centre
Location: Helmsley, North Yorkshire
Time Commitment: Approx. 4–8 hours/month (including quarterly board meetings)

About Us:
Helmsley Arts Centre is a vibrant and inclusive community hub dedicated to fostering creativity, artistic expression, and cultural engagement. We support local artists, deliver dynamic programming, and offer space for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience the arts.
As we look to strengthen our governance and shape the future of the centre, we are seeking passionate and committed individuals to join our Board of Trustees.
The Role:
As a Trustee, you will play a key role in overseeing the strategic direction and sustainability of Helmsley Arts Centre. You’ll work alongside fellow board members and the leadership team to ensure our mission is fulfilled with integrity, innovation, and impact.
Responsibilities include:
- Attending and contributing to quarterly board meetings (virtual or in-person)
- Supporting the centre’s vision, mission, and values
- Helping to ensure good governance and financial oversight
- Acting as an ambassador for the organisation in the community
- Advising on strategic matters, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement
We are especially interested in applicants with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Finance or legal expertise
- Fundraising and development
- Marketing and communications
- Community engagement
- Arts education or cultural programming
- HR and organisational development

Casual Technician: Work within the technical team at Helmsley Arts Centre providing tech for the varied programme of events and activities; including working get-ins, get-outs, rigging, programming and operating tech for events and productions.
Job Description:
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Rigging, programming and operating tech for events/gigs/productions
- Providing a welcoming environment to visiting artists/theatre companies/musicians to HAC
- Following a provided technical specification
- Good communication with HAC Technical Coordinator to provide availability
- Comply to, and work within, the guidelines of HAC’s license and working practices, as identified by the Technical coordinator especially with regard to Health and Safety issues, including:
o Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences
o Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations
o Work at height regulations
o Provision and use of work equipment regulations
o Electricity at work regulations
o Noise at work regulations
o The understanding and implementation of the evacuation procedure and fire escape routes
o Hygiene and safety of staff and public areas, and good housekeeping in all staff areas
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
• A good understanding of how theatre and sound systems work
• Good working knowledge of health and safety and safe working practices
• Able to carry out the physical demands of the job including working at height
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
• Demonstrable experience of working in a technical capacity in music/theatre
• Relevant technical qualifications
•Specialist knowledge in one or more of the following: Live Sounds Production, Theatre Lighting, lighting/sound desk operation, Rigging
• Experience of working as part of a team
• Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate (desirable)

• Able to work under pressure, communicate effectively, share ideas and respect others
• A commitment to achieving the best possible technical standard
• Be presentable and wear appropriate PPE for the show they are staffing.
HOURS OF WORK Due to the nature of the role, working hours will vary according to the HAC programme of events and availability
Rate of pay: £15 per hour.
